Saudi Thanksgiving

On Friday evening, after a day at the beach, we enjoyed an amazing Thanksgiving dinner, Saudi-style. We actually had turkey, (which apparently no one eats in Saudi Arabia) and even pumpkin pie. I was pretty amazed.

The people who work in the service industry in the KSA (hotel staff, food servers, maintenance staff) are all foreigners. They typically from India, Phillipines, and Pakistan.

So, they import turkey and pumpkin pie for foreigners to eat on American Thanksgiving?

I have no idea if this turkey was domewstic or foreign. I do know that we were treate dto an extra special meal.

I talked to my wife and kids Friday night via video-conference on Skype. It helps ease the distance a bit.

If all the food service workers are foreign, does that mean unemployment is low?

I think it is great that you got to eat turkey in Saudi Arabia. Do they grow pumpkins in Saudi Arabia, or do they import them.

No, unemployment is an issue here because Saudi citizens are guaranteed free tuition through college. As a result, most Saudis are professionals, but there aren't enough professional-level jobs for them. It's kind of like the illegal immigration issue in the USA. Saudis tend not to accept certain kinds of work.

I am suprised that no one eats turkey or pumpkin pie. Did you have a good time on thanksgiving? Where did you have our meal on thanksgiving?

I liked the movie at the bottom of the page.

Mr.Joseph,

On Thanksgiving do the people eat turkey? Is Thanksgiving celebrated the way we celabrate it? I hope you are having a good time. Mrs.Wilkie said Hi.

The only people who celebrate Thanksgiving in Saudi Arabia are Americans who live here and remember heaving Thanksgiving dinners back home.

Where I'm staying here in Dhahran, there are lots of Americans. They have a super market where you can buy Butterball brand turkeys. I think they're imported from the USA. Nowadays, people can get almost everything here that we have back home if you have enough money.

I didn't see any fresh pumpkins, just pumpkin pie filling in a can. They served us Turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, salad, pumpkin and pecan pie.

Why do people in saudi arabia not eat turkey for thanks giving?

Rick J said...

Thanksgiving is only Thanksgiving in the USA. Other countries may have similar holidays, but they don't celebrate it in the KSA.

If, however, you are an American staying here, you may celebate it privately with family and friends.

We celebrated Thanksgiving the day after because we were travelling on Thanksgiving. The Americans here buy turkey at the store on the compound (like a camp) where they all live. All the Americans who work for Aramco live on the compound.
